Arikitamiro Pass Sharks (Makemo)

16° 37.1′ S · 143° 34.0′ W · approximate

Grey reef and blacktip sharks patrol Makemo's village pass in numbers, and big sharks slip under the Pouheva pier at dusk.

Practical

Approximate: placed at the Arikitamiro Pass drift-dive position, next to the village. Noonsite (March 2023): snorkel the pass from low slack into the incoming tide, 'sharks are plentiful', with lots of fish and vibrant coral. Hamble Warrior (July 2023) watched several large sharks swim under the pier into the lagoon after dark, the first big sharks they had seen there. Do not clean fish from the boat or the dinghy, and do not feed sharks. Get out of the water if sharks become excited, and avoid snorkeling at dusk near the quay, where catch is cleaned. Species are not named in these sources.
