Kauehi Southern Anchorage

15° 57.5′ S · 145° 4.8′ W

The 'official' southern anchorage: a 10 ft sand bank over gin-clear water in the SE part of the lagoon, beside a palm motu you can walk all the way around.

Practical

Position from Starry Horizons (May 2016). They anchored on a 10-ft (3 m) sand bank with no coral heads around. A clear colour line separates the bank from the surrounding 30 ft water, where a monohull anchored. Two large flat-topped coral heads lie just west. The point of the motu has a small shack and a concrete table. Cruisers walk the circumference collecting shells and have had bonfires on the point. Protection: the motu and reef break the sea from E-SE. In a strong 2011 maramu (SE-S blow), Yolo found this spot 'behind a reef and between two motus' didn't give ideal protection and moved 1.5 nm NE to the East Corner (Mahuehue) anchorage. Route from the pass (Yolo 2011): inside the pass at 15°56.926'S 145°10.622'W, east to 15°56.18'S 145°05.86'W in water around 100 ft with no reefs seen, then SE to the anchorage. Keep a bow watch with the sun high. No services.
