Kauehi East Corner Anchorage (Mahuehue)

15° 56.2′ S · 145° 3.3′ W

The extreme eastern lobe of Kauehi's lagoon, tucked behind the long eastern motu near the place called Mahuehue. Cruisers' first choice to sit out a maramu.

Practical

Position from Yolo (June 2011): anchor touched sand in 22 ft just north of Mahuehue. Very few coral heads, with great protection from N, NE, E, SE, S and SW. Yolo rode out a three-day SE-S blow here. Starry Horizons (May 2016) anchored nearby at 15°56.270'S 145°03.364'W in 30 ft with a few heads topping out around 10 ft. Scott Free (July 2013) anchored at 15°56.443'S 145°03.428'W, close behind the motu, in flat calm with 25-30 kt SE forecast. It took three drops to get clear of bommies, and they warn to anchor and approach only in good light with a bow lookout. Getting there from the Southern Anchorage: Yolo motored 1.5 nm NE along the shore by eye with no hazards seen. A road runs along the continuous eastern motu, so you can walk or cycle about 8 km to the village (Migration, Nov 2023). The motu has two abandoned houses. Its ocean side is surf-swept dead coral. No services. Float your chain.
