Katiu East End Beach

16° 26.4′ S · 144° 16.5′ W · approximate

Sand and reef flats on the remote east end of the lagoon, a favorite of cruisers for beachcombing, reef walks, coconuts and evening bonfires.

Practical

Approximate: placed about 300 m east of the Eastern Stream anchorage waypoint (16°26.43S / 144°16.64W) on the motu they describe; confirm on satellite imagery. Migration (May 2009) called the east end 'our favorite spot in the Tuamotus': reef walks, beachcombing, spearfishing, bonfires on the beach and coconuts. Eastern Stream (March 2021) explored the motu and toured by dinghy. Keep fires below the high-tide line and put them out fully; take all trash back to the boat. Ask in Hitianau before taking coconuts, which belong to someone.
