Katiu Village Anchorage (Hitianau)

16° 21.0′ S · 144° 20.9′ W · approximate

The lagoon off Katiu's small village of about 250 people, a friendly, rarely visited spot where cruisers have been welcomed into the school and pearl farmers' homes.

Practical

Approximate: Katiu's village (Hitianau, called Toini on English Wikipedia) and pass are on the north rim; the position is derived from the Soggy Paws pass longitude (144°21'W), the north-rim latitude near Katiu Airport (16.3394S / 144.4031W, French Wikipedia) and the commune's 7 km airport-village road. No source gives a waypoint, so confirm on satellite imagery. Migration (May 2009) spent a week exploring and snorkeling near the village, but no anchoring waypoint or depth has been published. Watch for pearl-farm lines and bommies throughout the lagoon (Eastern Stream 2021). Float your chain. Treat as exploratory: sound and inspect before anchoring.
