Three small stores and two snack bars serve Katiu, but expect minimal supplies, especially before a ship arrives.

Practical

Approximate: Katiu's village (Hitianau, called Toini on English Wikipedia) and pass are on the north rim; the position is derived from the Soggy Paws pass longitude (144°21'W), the north-rim latitude near Katiu Airport (16.3394S / 144.4031W, French Wikipedia) and the commune's 7 km airport-village road. No source gives a waypoint, so confirm on satellite imagery. Commune sheet (July 2024): 3 magasins and 2 snack-bars. Eastern Stream (2021) saw 'one little shop with minimal supplies.' Supply ships come twice a month (Cobia 3 and Maris Stella). Bring everything you need from Makemo or Fakarava. There is no boulangerie: the 2024 commune sheet lists only 3 magasins and 2 snack-bars and no bakery, so bake your own or buy bread in Makemo. True Blue (2013) found the store out of beer. No names or hours are published for the individual magasins: ask at the quay. The island also has beekeeping and laying hens (commune, 2024), so ask about honey and eggs.
