Hao Post Office and Bank
18° 6.5′ S · 140° 54.5′ W · approximate
The OPT post office opposite the dinghy dock sells and recharges Vini SIM cards, and Noonsite now reports an ATM there. Bring a reserve of XPF anyway, because it is the only cash machine on Hao.
Practical
Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30am-noon and 1pm-3pm. Buy and recharge Vini SIM cards, and pay prepaid and postpaid Vini contracts. The compendium reports both that the OPT will change money and that it only accepts USD for stamps without changing money, so arrive with enough XPF. There are no banks or ATMs. A magasin owner has changed USD for some cruisers at 100 XPF to US$1 (2019; verify locally). Hao has 4G near the village, and Google Fi has worked. The Natitua submarine cable reached Hao in December 2018. Position approximate: placed at the Otepa main quay, about 100 m NE of the anchoring spots cruisers logged just off the wharf (Soggy Paws compendium); the exact building was not located on a map. Update: Noonsite's Hao page (updated July 2025) and SV Knot Safety's March 2023 report both say the post office has an ATM, which supersedes the older compendium note of 'no banks or ATMs'. The commune's 2019 profile gives the OPT agency number as +689 40 97 03 50.
