Hanatekuua Bay (Hiva Oa)

9° 42.1′ S · 138° 59.7′ W

A small white-sand cove with a picnic site just east of Hanaiapa, best reached on foot from Hanaiapa. Since 2026 it is no longer an authorised anchorage.

Practical

A cruiser anchored at 09°42.105'S 138°59.657'W in 30 ft (9 m) in sand patches among coral, with good snorkelling around the eastern point (June 2022). LEGAL STATUS: not a ZMR under Arrêté 384 CM (2026), so overnight anchoring is prohibited. Anchor in Hanaiapa and hike over instead. The 2026 brief gives 30-45 minutes on the trail worn by goats, or ask a local to guide you. My Little Polynesia says about 1 hour one way to the beach. Bring water and sun protection.

Best for

Hike-in beach and snorkel from Hanaiapa
