Hiva Oa Airport (AUQ)

9° 46.1′ S · 139° 0.7′ W

Atuona Airport (also called Hiva Oa or Jacques Brel airport) sits on a plateau above Tahauku and has the only scheduled flights from the southern Marquesas to Papeete, for crew changes and parts.

Practical

IATA AUQ, ICAO NTMN; 4.5 km north-east of Atuona at 451 m elevation, with a 1,215 m asphalt runway (Wikipedia). Air Tahiti and Air Moana serve it; the Air Tahiti office is on Atuona's main road beside the bank (2026 brief and compendium). Allow 15-20 minutes by taxi from Atuona and pre-book, since taxis may not meet flights (2020). Excess baggage was charged per kg in 2019. Show international tickets at the Air Tahiti office for the connecting-flight allowance, and show dive cards for extra dive-gear allowance. The terminal building is named after Jacques Brel. The Smiling Tiki is just below the airport road.
