Hire cars are delivered to Tahauku quay. A 4x4 is the best way to see Taaoa, the Smiling Tiki and the long, spectacular drive to Puamau's giant tikis.

Position is the delivery point (Tahauku quay); the companies have no fixed counter at the harbour. Atuona Rent A Car: +689 87 72 17 17, 6,000 XPF/day, delivered to the quay (February 2024). Older reports (2019) give about 10,000 XPF/day including insurance for a Suzuki Vitara 4x4 booked via Hiva Oa Yacht Services. Weekend returns may be charged fuel by the kilometre because the gas station is shut (check the sum). Other options: Hiva Oa Yacht Services; the 2026 brief's 'car rental companies, cars delivered directly to the quay'; Utuau Rent A Car in Hanaiapa (+689 87 34 13 62); Puamau rentals (Tevenino Kuhi +689 87 75 44 73, Tehamoana Flore +689 87 75 47 47). A 2018 report advised asking for a 4-door Toyota rather than a 2-door Suzuki. Taxis: 2019 reports gave 1,500 XPF per person airport-Atuona and 300 XPF per person Tahauku-Atuona (verify locally). Book ahead; there may be none at the airport.
