Tehueto Petroglyphs Hike (Atuona)

9° 47.0′ S · 139° 1.6′ W

A valley walk up the Faakua river from Tahauku to boulders carved with turtles, human figures and fish, near an old me'ae and tohua. It is the best leg-stretcher straight from the anchorage.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap ('Pétroglyphes de Tehueto'; the 'Me'ae et Tohua de Tehueto' is about 100 m away). Free access; follow the Faakua river up from Tahauku Bay, about 1 hour each way (My Little Polynesia). The 2026 brief recommends booking a guided 2.5-hour round trip through the Tourism Committee, since paths are unmarked. Wear shoes for wet rocks; bring insect repellent; nonos (sandflies) near the beach.

Best for

A half-day hike from the dinghy dock
