Nahoe Anchorage (Hiva Oa)

9° 44.2′ S · 138° 55.3′ W

A tiny regulated anchorage off the hamlet of Nahoe (about 50 people) on the north-east coast, for those who want honey, vanilla and pétanque with the locals far from the crowds.

Practical

Coordinate is the centre of ZMR 'Nahoe' from Arrêté 384 CM (2026), six corner points between 09°44.16'S and 09°44.29'S, 138°55.30'W and 138°55.39'W. Quota: 4 boats under 20 m, up to 20 days (14 in busy periods). No published depth or holding data, so sound carefully and avoid coral. The 2026 brief: no quay, so beach the dinghy on the sandy beach; local products include honey, vanilla and dried bananas (ask the locals); there is a small church, community hall and pétanque court. At the village exit the Maheotete Art workshop offers an introduction to sculpture, +689 87 21 11 40. Hiva Oa anchoring is governed by Arrêté 384 CM of 31 March 2026: anchoring outside the listed regulated zones (ZMR) is prohibited for any vessel with accommodation; each ZMR needs prior authorization via the Escales service (escales.gov.pf, escales.dpam@administration.gov.pf, DPAM +689 40 54 45 78, 24/7); the Escales fee is deferred until the tariff is published. Inside a ZMR: 5 kn limit, no sailing, anchor lights sunset to sunrise, AIS on if fitted, no scuba or jet skis, swim only close to your boat, no sewage discharge, hull work, sanding or engine tests, and no underwater or hull lights.
