Anse Amyot Reef Snorkel (Toau)

15° 48.3′ S · 146° 9.0′ W · approximate

The shallow reef at the head of the Anse Amyot basin, where lagoon water spills over the coral: hundreds of reef fish, moray eels, puffers and lionfish in 5-20 ft of gin-clear water, a swim from the moorings.

Practical

Approximate position: the reef at the inner (east) end of the basin, derived from the mooring field fix; snorkel anywhere along the basin edges. Best 2-3 hours after low water when the incoming tide brings the clearest ocean water; the falling tide carries turbid lagoon water out (Noonsite 2023). On the rising tide you can also drift from the pass mouth back into the basin along its outer edges, where schools of fish, blacktip sharks, needlefish and groupers gather (Sugar Shack 2020). A manta cleaning station lies just over the reef inside the main lagoon; Gaston may show you where if he is not busy. A dinghy route into the main lagoon over the reef exists only at high tide and only with great care.
