Valentine and Gaston's Restaurant (Anse Amyot)
15° 48.1′ S · 146° 9.1′ W · approximate
The only restaurant on Toau: Valentine and Gaston cook family-style Polynesian dinners of lobster, poisson cru and reef fish for small groups of cruisers in their home at Anse Amyot.
Practical
Position is the Varua Hotspot coverage point for Anse Amyot on Motu Matariva (listed in the compendium), used as an approximate fix for the house; you land by dinghy from the moorings. Open roughly April to October; book ahead because dinners are cooked for groups of about 8-10 and fill up, and in the off season Valentine 'may' cook for six or more (2020). Menus depend on the catch: fish, lobster and some meat. Historic prices: a full feast 3,000 XPF per person (2010, 2013) and lobster 3,000 XPF each (2018), verify locally. In some years eating ashore covered the mooring fee. Valentine speaks English. They also sell some garden produce (tomatoes, papaya, mango, avocado) when there is surplus, plus black pearls from their old farm (Cloudy Bay bought pearls, paying half in cash and half in requested groceries, May 2023). Welcome gifts: limes, fruit from the Marquesas, seeds for the garden, coffee, wine. The family sometimes splits time between Toau and Fakarava; respect the property if they are away.
