Anaa Feo Coast and Caves

17° 29.1′ S · 145° 23.8′ W · approximate

Kilometres of 'feo', dark fossil-coral rock formations lifted 8 m by the weight of Tahiti, along Anaa's ocean shore from Tematahoa to Otepipi, plus caves and brackish swimming grottos inland.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: the abandoned village of Tematahoa (OpenStreetMap), the eastern end of the feo coast described by Welcome Tahiti. Welcome Tahiti: the ocean-side coast from Tematahoa to Otepipi and up to Temari has magnificent feo landscapes, best seen by boat. A grotto near Putuahara, filled with cold brackish water, is a village swimming hole. Another grotto lies on Tematahoa motu. The Vaitea sub-lagoon in the NW has white sand and natural pools reachable by small boat. Abandoned villages (Putuahara, Otepipi, Tematahoa) keep standing churches used for processions. Arrange a guide or boat through a Tukuhora guesthouse. The 2021 government sheet lists a botanical trail and the 'Pito de Anaa' as tourist sites.
