Ahurei Mooring 2 (Rapa Iti)

27° 36.7′ S · 144° 19.9′ W

The second cruiser-installed mooring in Ahurei Bay (2022), north of the main dock, for smaller yachts; with Mooring 1 it is the safe alternative to anchoring on the bay's coral and rubble.

Practical

Waypoint from Pitufa: 27°36.700'S 144°19.872'W. Two 750 kg blocks linked by 14 mm chain with a 25 mm rope to the surface; suitable for yachts of about 41 ft / 12 t or less (heavier boats use Mooring 1, 2.4-2.5 t block). Attach with two lines, one to each bow cleat, and do not haul the buoy on deck (chafes the rope). The bay is 20-30 m deep; shallower water under 15 m is often live staghorn coral, so do not anchor there. Protected from swell by the reef across the entrance, but violent williwaws come off the ridges in N, W or S winds; easterlies blow straight in. No fee is mentioned in the sources; ask at the mairie. Dinghy to the main dock in Ha'urei.

Best for

Secure mooring for boats up to about 41 ft
