Volcán del Totumo Mud-Volcano Tour

10° 44.7′ N · 75° 14.5′ W

A 15 m cone of warm mud on the coast road to Barranquilla: climb the wooden stairs, sink into the crater with a dozen strangers, get a mud massage, then wash off in the Ciénaga del Totumo lagoon - the classic half-day out from Cartagena.

Practical

Position from Wikipedia (10°44'40.1"N 75°14'29.05"W), in Santa Catalina, Bolívar. Wikivoyage: about 45 km northeast of Cartagena; tours around COP 30,000 and tips of COP 1,000–5,000 per helper (masseur, photographer, the women who wash you off) are the norm - undated, verify locally. The national cruising guide: less than 3 km off the Galerazamba turnoff on the coast road north of Cartagena; the mound rises about 10 m; mud is washed off in the Ciénaga del Totumo. Spanish Wikipedia: reached via Route 90A (Vía al Mar); a rustic wooden staircase climbs to the crater; locals sell fried fish and coconut rice, mind belongings and run cheap boat rides around the lagoon's islets. Only 10–15 people fit in the crater at a time (Wikipedia), so go early. This is a land excursion - leave the boat at Club Náutico or Club de Pesca, take the tour or a taxi, and bring small bills and a plastic bag for your swimsuit.
