Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary

17° 29.8′ N · 88° 7.2′ W

A manatee sanctuary among the Drowned Cayes between Belize City and Caye Caulker, where West Indian manatees rest and feed in a seagrass-floored hole beside the mangroves.

Practical

Established July 2002, nearly 9,000 acres, about four miles east of Belize City and 19 miles southwest of Caye Caulker, managed by the non-profit Friends of Swallow Caye. Boats must cut their engines on entering and pole, to avoid propeller strikes and engine noise (Travel Belize). Tours run from Caye Caulker, San Pedro and Belize City. Keep yachts and dinghies under power well clear. Position: OpenStreetMap sanctuary centroid.
