South Hole Sound Anchorage (Owen Island, Little Cayman)

19° 39.5′ N · 80° 4.2′ W · approximate

A reef-enclosed lagoon on Little Cayman's south-west side with uninhabited Owen Island in the middle; the Sister Islands' only all-round shelter, protected even in a moderate westerly.

Practical

Coordinate approximate (inside the reef, west of Owen Island). Virgintino calls the entry 'Owens Sound': go to 19 39.25N, 080 04.47W, which puts you on the range ashore (white triangle in front, white square behind) and enter on it. Green buoy on the west side of the reef entrance, white and red/white posts on the east; two privately maintained lit markers (red and green). The channel carries about 6-7 ft and doglegs to starboard. Anchor in 5-7 ft, shoaling to 5 ft eastward; over 6 ft draft, anchor near the entrance. Do not anchor on the range line (dive boats use it). Do not enter or leave in rough conditions. Blossom Village (formerly South Town) is at the SW end with the Customs officer (hail VHF 16), car rental, gas station and nurse (2015). A 2023 cruiser calls it 'a good lagoon'. Little Cayman is not a port of entry: arrive cleared from Grand Cayman or Cayman Brac.
