Samaná Town Anchorage

19° 11.9′ N · 69° 19.4′ W · approximate

The anchorage off Santa Bárbara de Samaná, a lively waterfront town and the base for whale watching, Los Haitises trips and the DR's northeast cruising.

Practical

Position approx: open water between the town waterfront and the Cayo Vigía causeway, derived from OpenStreetMap (checked to be in water); the Virgintino guide's waypoint (19°12.01N 69°18.96W) is an approach point. Enter Samaná Bay along the north coast following the marked channel north of Cayo Levantado. About 17 ft, good holding in mud; reasonable protection from the sea. Port of entry: expect a boatload of officials (Navy, M-2, drugs, Ports, Immigration, Customs) after anchoring. The guide (~2015) notes Ports sometimes asks US$0.70/ft to anchor, a charge the law (519-5) only allows for using a government dock: pay or politely decline; verify locally. The town dock doubles as the dinghy dock. Bad history of dinghy and outboard theft: do not leave the boat unattended and lock everything.
