Samaná Market & Supermarket

19° 12.3′ N · 69° 20.6′ W · approximate

A vibrant open-air fruit, vegetable, meat and fish market faces a supermarket in Santa Bárbara de Samaná. It is the best provisioning between Puerto Plata and Punta Cana.

Practical

Position approx: between the OSM-mapped Supermercado on the Sánchez–Samaná road (19.20495, -69.34326) and the bus stop named "Mercado" beside it (19.20445, -69.34314); the guide says the open-air market operates across the street from the supermarket. Earlier versions of this entry used the Wikipedia town-center point, which is off to the east. The Virgintino guide (~2015) quotes a whole stem of bananas (about 50) for under US$10, with tangerines, oranges, lettuce, tomatoes, plantains, mangos and papaya equally cheap (verify locally). Motoconchos and covered motorcycle rickshaws haul provisions around town for about a dollar per person (2015 figure, verify locally). Smaller mini-markets line the Malecón closer to the town dock.
