Rainy Season & Hurricane Season (Cartagena Refuge)

10° 24.7′ N · 75° 32.6′ W · approximate

Cartagena sits below the main hurricane belt (around 12.5°N), so the protected inner bay and its yards are a classic place to wait out the Atlantic hurricane season - with a wetter, calmer, more thundery climate from April to November.

Practical

Coordinate approximate (Manga anchorage). The national cruising guide notes Colombia lies below the hurricane zone (12.5°N) and that its coasts allow boats to stay for weeks or months in hurricane season; Noonsite: hurricanes rarely reach as far south as Colombia (rare, not impossible - check your insurer's named-storm box). Wet season April–November; dry December–March, plus a drier spell June–August (national guide). Atlantic hurricane season officially June 1–November 30. In the rainy season the guide advises anchoring on the northern side of the Rosario archipelago because the south is more exposed to strong winds. Many boats are stored at Ferroalquimar, Manzanillo or Marina Portobello while owners travel (Noonsite comments report no lightning problems compared with Panama).
