Hunting Caye Anchorage & Ranger Station

16° 6.6′ N · 88° 16.3′ W · approximate

The administrative heart of the Sapodilla Cayes: anchor off Hunting Caye's crescent beach, check in with the rangers, and walk up to the 65-ft lighthouse; reserve staff, a Coast Guard outpost and a University of Belize research facility share the caye.

Practical

Position approximate: west of Hunting Caye's OpenStreetMap outline. The OCC notes found Grass Cay and NE Sapodilla poorly holding and suggest Hunting Caye as the better anchorage. Check in and pay reserve fees at the Rangers' Station; a resident police officer acts as immigration officer for Guatemalan and Honduran visitors (management plan) and noforeignland reviewers report efficient immigration and ranger service here (BZ$190 for two for five days in transit). Facilities built for visitors include a pier, toilets, showers, BBQ grills and a picnic area. The lighthouse on the southeast point is 65 ft with a 12-mile range, staffed by two Port Authority keepers. Hawksbill turtles nest on the beaches - keep lights low.
