Garifuna Settlement Day (Hopkins & Dangriga)

16° 52.0′ N · 88° 17.0′ W

Every 19 November the Garifuna coast celebrates the arrival of their ancestors with a dawn re-enactment, the Yurumein, in which canoes land singing and drumming, followed by parades, drumming and dancing through the streets - biggest in Dangriga, and a highlight in Hopkins.

Practical

Date: 19 November; if it falls on a Sunday, the public holiday is the following Monday (Wikipedia). The re-enactment lands at about 6:30 am (Travel Belize). Celebrations take place in Dangriga, Hopkins, Barranco, Punta Gorda, Belize City, Georgetown and San Pedro among others (Travel Belize). The national holiday was declared in 1977 after Thomas Vincent Ramos founded it in 1941 (Wikipedia). Position: Hopkins village (Wikipedia). Offices close for the holiday - do not plan clearance that day; anchor off Dangriga or Hopkins only in settled weather.
