East End & Wreck of the Ten Sail
19° 18.6′ N · 81° 3.9′ W
Grand Cayman's quiet, 'true Caymanian' East End: blowholes in the ironshore, old lighthouses and the reef where ten ships of a convoy wrecked in 1794.
Practical
Position is Virgintino's East Channel waypoint half a mile east of the reef entrance (19 18.6N, 081 03.9W). The East End reef entrance is difficult in the trades, with scattered coral inside and 6-10 ft behind the reef; a pole marks the north side of the entrance - for adventurous, experienced crews in settled weather only; most visit by road. The Wreck of the Ten Sails Park commemorates the 1794 wreck; the 1937 lighthouse overlooks it (Virgintino). The Glamis wreck (1913) lies off East End and has a DoE mooring.
