West Plana Cay Anchorage

22° 35.2′ N · 73° 37.7′ W

A gorgeous anchorage in transparent turquoise water off the lee shore of uninhabited West Plana Cay, usually an overnight stop between Acklins and Mayaguana or the Turks and Caicos, but worth longer for its empty beaches, shelling and the steep drop-off on its western edge.

Practical

noforeignland position N 22°35.163' W 073°37.664': sand in 2-6 m with lots of room and good protection from east wind and sea; one reviewer says night arrival is possible. noforeignland rates it 4.8 but advises settled conditions and avoiding NE winds. The anchorage is open to the west, so leave before a front. Mayaguana is about 30 miles to windward. No fresh water or services; seasonal cascarilla-bark harvesters sometimes camp on the east beach. A long, deep reef system extends east from the south-east corner of Acklins on the way here (good bottom fishing). A charter captain reports anchoring in about 40 ft near the steep wall for diving.

Best for

An empty-beach stopover between Acklins and Mayaguana

Season

Settled E–SE trades; avoid NE and W
