Water Cay South Anchorage

23° 0.4′ N · 75° 43.8′ W

A small rocky cove near the south end of Water Cay's west side, stark and beautiful, with nesting ospreys ashore and the sea visible over the low land.

Practical

ActiveCaptain: good holding in sand with charted water close to shore and less current near the beach; easy approach from north or south; no protection from N or W winds. A February 2025 crew found it very calm with no swell in E 15 kt, plenty of sand and good depth close in; they came in from the ocean side through a 'good deep wide cut' (steep seas in E 20 on the ebb) and crossed between the rocks opposite the anchorage at half tide, finding 8-9 ft where Aquamap showed 4 ft (Navionics agreed with the deeper reading). A 2006 correspondent anchored alone in a small cove at the south end while 10 boats sat at the north end. Small beach just south for the dinghy.

Best for

Quiet alternative to the north end; stop on the way north from the Raggeds

Season

Dec–May; best Mar–May between fronts; leave or move to a front refuge before W–N winds
