Schooner Cays

24° 54.0′ N · 76° 22.1′ W

A string of sand islands and miles of parallel sand bars on the Bight north-west of Cape Eleuthera, home to nesting ospreys: one of the most beautiful and least visited anchorages in the Bahamas.

Practical

Position from the ActiveCaptain 'Schooner Cay (Middle) Paradise' marker. Charts are useless here: navigate by eye and satellite imagery, following the gutters (over 3 m) to the largest middle island; only one reef to avoid. Anchor in the blue hole on the east side (soft sand, excellent holding) or, for more swing room, about 10 ft on the north-west side (2019). Boats drawing over 1 m can only cross the entrance bar at high tide. The bars stop all surge; you swing with the tide at high water. Walk the bars at low tide. Local boats run day trips here from Cape Eleuthera (Wikivoyage).

Best for

Sandbar walks and total solitude, by eye in good light
