Cape Eleuthera Wall (Exuma Sound drop-off)

Just off the south-west tip of Eleuthera the shelf falls away into the 1,000-ft-plus depths of Exuma Sound, giving a wall of swim-throughs, pinnacles and caves only about ten minutes by boat from Cape Eleuthera marina.

Approx position: placed in deep water about 1 mile west-south-west of Powell Point, where the Exuma Sound edge runs close to the cape; individual moorings and site marks are kept by the dive boat, so dive it with the Cape Eleuthera dive shop rather than from your own boat. Named sites on this stretch (Dive the World): Cave Rock (caves and a big swim-through at about 50 ft / 15 m, silversides, nurse sharks, sometimes hammerheads); Cut Through City (advanced swim-through exiting on the wall at about 90 ft / 27 m, a sponge-covered anchor below at about 130 ft / 40 m); Hole in the Wall (swim-through that exits about 7 m lower); The Monolith (coral pinnacles rising about 40 ft from sand at 100 ft / 30 m on the wall edge, garden eels); Split Coral Head (coral mound at about 55 ft / 16 m used for shark feeds, Caribbean reef sharks and stingrays, with the wall nearby); and Jake's Hole (a tidal blowhole about 20 ft deep and 30 ft wide that sucks water in on the ebb and blows out on the flood: dangerous, approach only with a guide). Dive the World also lists a Cobia Cage (SeaStation) research cage at 70 to 100 ft; confirm with the shop whether it is still in place. Strong currents are possible and advanced skills are recommended for the deeper wall (DivePlanner Pro); recent logged visibility 18 to 30 m. Water around 80 F (islands.com). Wall life includes reef, nurse and occasionally hammerhead and oceanic whitetip sharks, eagle rays, turtles and horse-eye jacks.
