North Andros Barrier Reef

25° 1.5′ N · 77° 55.5′ W

Part of the roughly 140-mile Andros Barrier Reef, which runs 1 to 2 miles off the east coast: shallow coral gardens inside, breaking reef crest, then a wall at 70 to 120 ft that falls away into the Tongue of the Ocean.

Practical

Position: centre of a Wikimedia Commons aerial photo of the northern Andros reef (25.02534 N, 77.92454 W). Wikipedia: corals inside the reef sit in 3 to 6 m, 'The Wall' begins at about 21 to 37 m and the drop-off is only about a mile from shore in places. Dive or snorkel by dinghy from the Mastic Bay or Staniard Creek anchorages in calm weather; anchor in sand, never on coral. Breaking waves mark the shallowest reef. Parts of the reef are inside the BNT North & South Marine Parks (no-take).

Best for

Reef snorkelling and diving straight off the anchorage
