Hike· Long Island· Bahamas — Eleuthera, Andros & the Out Islands

Hamilton's Cave walk-through (guided)

23° 11.3′ N · 75° 6.9′ W · approximate

An hour's walk underground through the Bahamas' largest cave system at Hamilton's, led by the Cartwright family who have owned it for generations, past Lucayan sites and roosts of up to five bat species.

Practical

Position is approximate (same as the Hamilton's Cave entry: the geotag of a 1989 Wikimedia Commons photo). Guided only: book through Cape Santa Maria's front office, Stella Maris ('Guided Tour Only') or by calling the Cartwrights; a 2022 cruiser drove down from Thompson Bay and was guided by Leonard Cartwright, who said five bat species live there (they saw three). The walk is mostly flat but dark, damp and uneven; wear closed shoes, bring a headlamp and do not touch the bats. Combine it with lunch at Max's Conch Bar and a swim at Dean's Blue Hole. No anchorage nearby: come by car from Thompson Bay (about 30 to 40 minutes) or Clarence Town.
