Flamingo Tongue Reef (Cape Santa Maria boat snorkel)

23° 32.9′ N · 75° 19.6′ W · approximate

A shallow beginner reef off Long Island's north-west coast with schools of yellow goatfish and snapper, scorpionfish, stingrays and parrotfish, used by Cape Santa Maria and Stella Maris for snorkel and dive trips.

Practical

Position is approximate: the centroid of the OpenStreetMap reef way named 'Flamingo Reef' near the M/V Comberbach wreck, assumed to be this site (Cape Santa Maria lists Flamingo Tongue Reef at 12 minutes by boat and the Comberbach at 15 minutes); confirm with the dive staff. Cape Santa Maria calls it 'a great dive for beginners' and runs a 3-hour snorkel and nature cruise with gear and a guide; My Out Islands says it has 'just about every type of coral and fish imaginable on a reef'. Cape Santa Maria also lists Barracuda Head (25 minutes, shallow, large coral formations, a swim-through tunnel and tame barracudas), Turtle Heads (20 minutes, hawksbill and green turtles, large stingrays) and Angelfish Reef (20 minutes); their positions are not published. If going by dinghy from Calabash Bay or Hog Cay, pick a settled east to south-east day, anchor in sand clear of coral, and fly a dive flag.
