Conception Island Creek (dinghy tour)

23° 49.4′ N · 75° 7.6′ W · approximate

A high-tide dinghy drift into the mangrove creek that fills the island's interior - green turtles, young sharks, conch and crawfish in gin-clear shallows, with egrets along the edges. Widely rated the highlight of Conception.

Practical

Only entrance is about two-thirds of the way down the west shore (BNT); the point here is that mouth, derived from where the OSM-mapped creek meets the coastline. A shallow bar crosses the entrance: Southern Boating advises arriving about an hour before high tide; BNT says the tide follows Nassau by about an hour and a half. Near high water you can run about a mile into the flats, with several side arms. The channel shifts with the sand bars and becomes untenable in westerly wind or swell. 4-knot speed limit inside; idle and drift, do not chase turtles. BNT recommends a drift dive out of the creek at the start of the ebb. A cruiser report notes the water can be sandy and less clear on some tides. No-take national park.
