Nassau Harbour Control (VHF 16)

25° 5.2′ N · 77° 21.2′ W · approximate

The port authority radio that controls every movement in Nassau Harbour, one of the busiest cruise-ship ports in the Caribbean. Permission is mandatory for yachts too.

Practical

Pin is the western harbour entrance (ActiveCaptain inlet position), not the radio station. Call Nassau Harbour Control on VHF 16 when within about a mile and before reaching the breakwater; they usually shift you to working channel 9. Give boat name, registration, last port of call and destination in the harbour; they advise traffic and grant permission. Call again before leaving, or before changing position inside the harbour (Noonsite 2021; Association of Bahamas Marinas). Staffed 24 hours. This applies even if passing through to a marina or to Montagu Bay. Cruise ships and freighters move at all hours, mainly at the west end; a 2022 cruiser noted Harbour Control is chiefly concerned with west-end ship movements. Bridges: the two Paradise Island bridges give about 70-72 ft clearance over the main channel.
