Junkanoo Beach Anchorage
25° 4.9′ N · 77° 21.2′ W
The closest anchorage to Nassau's western harbour entrance, off the town beach west of the cruise docks, a short walk from the Arawak Cay Fish Fry and downtown.
Practical
Waterway Guide position N 25°04.853' W 077°21.242'; depths 5-11 ft. Good holding in sand. Protected SE through W; open to the north. In winds over 15 knots from any direction expect rolling at the change of the tide; in northerlies the roll is constant. Strong reversing currents and daytime wakes. Beach landing for the dinghy. Call Nassau Harbour Control on VHF 16 before anchoring in the harbour area. IMPORTANT (ActiveCaptain, April 9, 2024): police told all boats anchored here to leave immediately even after Port Control had approved the anchoring; the harbour authority no longer wants boats anchored here. Cruise ships pass right by daily, so stay outside the channel markers. Treat as closed to anchoring unless Harbour Control says otherwise; use Crystal Cay or Long Cay instead.
Best for
Historically the Fish Fry anchorage; now discouraged by the authorities
Season
Settled S-E winds only; untenable in northers
