Abaco Winter Cold Fronts

26° 31.8′ N · 77° 0.0′ W · approximate

From December to February, cold fronts sweep through every week or so, clocking the wind from southeast through west to northwest and north, often 20-30 kt; open beach anchorages become untenable for a day or two, and the ocean cuts rage.

Practical

Coordinate is a nominal point in the Sea of Abaco between Marsh Harbour and Elbow Cay. Hiding places in this subregion: Marsh Harbour (marinas.com calls it the best-protected harbour in the Abacos), Hope Town Harbour moorings and the Man-O-War harbours, or a slip in White Sound. Leave west-exposed spots before the front: Tahiti Beach, Aunt Pat's Bay, Lubbers Quarters, White Sound's outside anchorage and Scopley Rock. Expect North and South Man-O-War Channels to close in the northerly swell after a front. Listen to the Abaco Cruisers Net (VHF 68, 8:15 am) and Barometer Bob for timing. Map position is an approximate representative point for this entry (derived from the nearest settlement, dock or harbour named above), not a surveyed location.
