Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness

57° 45.1′ N · 133° 0.6′ W · approximate

This wilderness area of about 653,000 acres in the Tongass National Forest takes in both Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm, with about one-fifth of the area ice-covered. It is brown and black bear country, with wolves, mountain goats near South Sawyer Glacier, and harbor seals on the ice.

Practical

Position is the OSM area centroid, an approximate label, not a place to go. The designation year is given as 1990 by Wikipedia and as 1980 elsewhere; sources conflict. Managed by the Forest Service; check with the Juneau Ranger District for current rules and any closures (none found). Bears: store food in a bear-resistant container, never in a tent, boat cockpit or kayak where you can avoid it; cook at least 100 yards from where you sleep; do not camp in the intertidal zone (ADF&G, NPS guidance). The 2025 landslide and tsunami hazard applies to the whole fjord system (see Lower Tracy Arm).
