Sawyer Glaciers (Head of Tracy Arm)

57° 54.3′ N · 133° 12.6′ W · approximate

The twin North and South Sawyer glaciers sit at the head of Tracy Arm, around Sawyer Island. South Sawyer still calves into the fjord; a 2024 cruiser's account says North Sawyer is no longer a tidewater glacier.

Practical

Position is approximate, in the fjord near Sawyer Island, well short of the ice. This is the area of the August 2025 landslide and tsunami; SailSpo advises against routing a private boat to the Sawyer glaciers while the slope is unstable (see Lower Tracy Arm). Even in normal conditions, the National Park Service advises small boats to stay at least half a mile from a glacier terminus and notes that falling ice can still make large waves at that distance (Kenai Fjords guidance; no equivalent official rule was found for Tracy Arm). Landing near the glaciers is not recommended.
