Aialik Cape (Aialik Peninsula)
59° 42.2′ N · 149° 31.4′ W
The southern tip of the narrow peninsula between Resurrection Bay and Aialik Bay, and the one exposed corner on the way into the fjords. Boats leave the lee of Resurrection Bay here, meet the Gulf of Alaska swell, and then turn north into Aialik Bay.
Practical
Coordinate is the OSM cape node (USGS Topo). The NPS says kayakers should not try to round the cape from Seward because the coast has long exposed stretches with no landing sites between Callisto Head and Aialik Cape; that is guidance for paddlers, but it shows there is no bail-out beach. A 48north cruising account describes rounding in a gale with a large easterly swell over 10 ft, reflected waves off the headland and thick fog, and says the crew gave the cape a wide berth. Choose a settled window and treat the leg as the weather-critical part of any Aialik trip. See the passage note for Aialik Cape.
Best for
A weather-timed rounding on the way into Aialik Bay
Season
Summer; afternoon southerlies and Gulf swell are the usual problem
