Holgate Arm: Glacier and Public Use Cabin (Aialik Bay)
59° 51.0′ N · 149° 50.4′ W · approximate
A side arm leading west to Holgate Glacier, another tidewater glacier whose ice often clogs the arm. A reservable NPS cabin sits on the north-east shore with views of the calving ice.
Practical
Position is an open-water waypoint down the arm from the glacier, not the face. The NPS says heavy ice in Holgate Arm can make boating and landing difficult, and advises keeping off the small beaches near the glacier, which can be completely washed by glacier-generated waves. The cabin (Alaska.org gives 59.830, -149.765) sleeps six, has a pit toilet and a diesel stove, no water or electricity, costs $75 a night, and shares the Aialik cabin rules and booking. Main beach is at the south-east end of the arm. Bring your own water or treat natural sources (boil, or a 1-micron filter plus chlorine dioxide, per the NPS).
