Aialik Glacier (Aialik Bay)
59° 56.7′ N · 149° 43.1′ W · approximate
A big tidewater glacier at the head of the bay that drops ice into the water. Sailing boats can watch it calve from a safe distance and pick floating ice from the water for drinks.
Practical
Position is a viewing waypoint in open water south of the glacier face, not the ice itself; the face retreats, so use what you can see. NPS says stay at least half a mile off any glacier terminus, because calving can still generate large waves at that distance, and never land or camp within two miles of tidewater ice. Keep clear of bergs by at least twice their height or width. In summer, tour boats in Aialik Bay listen on VHF 16 or 72. A cruising crew reported watching Aialik and Holgate calve and gingerly motoring through floating ice.
