Whale and Dolphin Watching (West Coast)
14° 1.2′ N · 61° 2.4′ W · approximate
The deep water off St Lucia's west coast holds dolphins and pilot whales year-round, with sperm whales resident in the region and humpbacks passing through in late winter, so keep a lookout on any coastal passage.
Practical
Position is an illustrative offshore point west of Castries (approx; sightings occur along the whole leeward coast). The Saint Lucia Tourism Authority lists spinner dolphins frequently sighted year-round, bottlenose and pantropical spotted dolphins (the latter common off the west coast), less frequent Fraser's, Risso's and striped dolphins, resident pods of pilot whales, and sperm whales considered resident in the region and seen in deeper water. Humpbacks migrate through between February and April, and seas are typically calmest December to May. Operators run trips from Rodney Bay, Labrelotte Bay and Castries. Follow regulated approach distances; do not chase, touch or feed animals.
