Vermont Nature Trail (St Vincent Parrot)

13° 12.9′ N · 61° 13.0′ W · approximate

A network of rainforest loops on Grand Bonhomme at the head of the Buccament Valley, and the best place to see the endemic St Vincent amazon parrot flying over the canopy from the Parrot Lookout.

Practical

Coordinate is the centroid of OpenStreetMap's 'Vermont Nature trail' area (approx). SVG Tourism: an estimated 500 parrots live in the interior, and dawn and dusk are prime time; listen for calls as you near the Parrot Lookout on the far side of the loop. Also look for the endemic whistling warbler, Antillean crested hummingbird, purple-throated carib, brown trembler and rufous-throated solitaire. Taxi from Buccament, Kingstown or the south-coast anchorages, and go early. The parrot (Amazona guildingii) is endemic, and Wikipedia cites trapping, hunting and habitat loss as the causes of its decline.
