St George's Lagoon Anchorage

12° 2.7′ N · 61° 44.8′ W

St George's Lagoon is the old harbour's flooded inner basin, below the town and the forts. A few boats can still anchor here, a dinghy ride from the Carenage, the market and clearance at Port Louis.

Practical

Position is Noonsite's St George's port position, 12°02.7'N 61°44.8'W, which plots in the Lagoon. Noonsite gives Lagoon depths of 4.9–8.2 m and 3.4 m in the entrance channel from the Carenage. The Carenage, the north basin, is for commercial vessels only. Free anchoring space is shrinking and the north-east sector is crowded with derelicts and local boats. A very few boats can anchor along the entrance channel between Port Louis and the Grenada Yacht Club. Some cruisers anchor outside the Lagoon along the cliffs at Martin's Bay instead, but that spot is open to swell from the north, south and west, and thefts from boats anchored outside the Lagoon keep being reported. CSSN logged a burglary in July 2024 and a dinghy and outboard theft in January 2025, taken within 45 minutes before the owners lifted it for the night. Do not anchor in Grand Anse Bay south of 12°02.05'N (GAMPA) or north of the harbour-entrance leading lights. You may not anchor within 200 m of any beach without written permission. Dinghy landings: Port Louis (about $10 a day for non-guests, 2024), the Island Water World pontoon and the Grenada Yacht Club. Lift and lock the dinghy every night.
