Southern Grenadines Hurricane Season (Jun 1 - Nov 30)

12° 35.8′ N · 61° 24.8′ W · approximate

The southern Grenadines sit in the Atlantic hurricane belt, and on July 1, 2024 Category 4-5 Hurricane Beryl passed with its eye wall over Union, wrecking Clifton, Ashton, Mayreau's beach bars and the Palm Island resort. The official season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10.

Practical

Coordinate is derived: Clifton Harbour, shown for map placement; the season applies to the whole area. NOAA's National Hurricane Center: official Atlantic season June 1 to November 30, peak September 10, most activity mid-August to mid-October. Beryl showed that early-season storms can hit hard. There is no recognised hurricane hole in the southern SVG Grenadines: the Tobago Cays, Salt Whistle, Saline Bay, Chatham Bay and Clifton are all open or reef-protected anchorages, and Clifton's moorings are not storm-rated. Cruisers mostly move south to Grenada for the season, haul out (Carriacou's Tyrrel Bay, Grenada, Trinidad) or seek the Tyrrel Bay mangroves or Clarkes Court Bay as refuges. Check your insurer's named-storm and latitude rules, watch the NHC outlooks daily from June, and leave early: services, fuel and water in Clifton and Mayreau were still limited in 2025. Summer also brings squalls, Saharan dust haze and lighter, shifting winds.
