Lower Bay Beach and Anchorage (Bequia)

13° 0.0′ N · 61° 15.0′ W

The long powdery beach at the southern end of Admiralty Bay, backed by Lower Bay village and a string of beach bars - De Reef, Keegan's, Dawn's Cafe. Shallow pools along the inshore reef suit children, and the snorkelling point between Lower Bay and Princess Margaret is among the best on the island.

Practical

Coordinate is Doyle's 'Lower Bay approach' waypoint (N13 00.0', W061 15.0'); the beach itself is east of it. Anchor off the beach in sand outside the swimmers; Doyle lists it as a separate approach from the main Admiralty Bay waypoint. A cruiser (Sailing Helacious) found the reef off the west end of Princess Margaret Beach, toward Lower Bay, the best snorkelling they had seen in the Caribbean (octopus, morays, lobster). Like other west-facing anchorages it can turn rolly in winter north and north-west swells. Ashore: beach chairs for rent; De Reef hosts the Bequia Music Fest's Sunday 'Music by the Beach' finale. A cliffside trail over Princess Point links Lower Bay to Princess Margaret Beach.

Best for

Beach day, snorkel and a lunch ashore from the boat

Season

Dec-Apr; swell from the north or west makes it rolly
