Hurricane Beryl Recovery (Carriacou and PM, 2024)

12° 29.0′ N · 61° 27.4′ W · approximate

On July 1, 2024, Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou as a Category 4 with 140 mph winds, the strongest storm ever to hit the island. It damaged or destroyed about 99% of Carriacou's buildings and about 70% of Petite Martinique's. The islands are open to cruisers again, but rebuilding goes on.

Practical

Coordinate is Hillsborough (approx). Wikipedia: landfall at about 11:10 am local time (3:10 pm UTC) on July 1, 2024, at 140 mph; Carriacou stripped of vegetation and its marinas significantly damaged; two deaths on Carriacou. Noonsite (Feb 2025): all major marine services are back (apart from on Union Island), but services ashore may still be limited. Carriacou Marine, the Iguana Café and Bogles Round House have reopened, and more than 30 wrecked boats have been removed from Tyrrel Bay and Oyster Bed. Noforeignland (Jan 2026) still mentions derelict boats in Tyrrel Bay and incomplete recovery ashore. The 2026 Carriacou Regatta was the first since the storm (NOW Grenada). Spend locally, and check with businesses before relying on them; Pure Grenada keeps a Carriacou trip-planning page with updates. Lesson for crews: Carriacou lies within the hurricane belt, so have a summer plan (haul-out with tie-downs, or Grenada or Trinidad).
