Carriacou Parang Festival
12° 29.0′ N · 61° 27.4′ W · approximate
A Christmas-season contest since 1977 in which village parang bands sing a traditional carol as their 'test piece', then speed up into a satirical 'melee' that lampoons the year's island gossip, with Big Drum, quadrille and Shakespeare Mas alongside.
Practical
Coordinate is Hillsborough (approx). Held before Christmas (Noonsite); Pure Grenada describes costumed bands playing bass drum, guitar, violin, cuatro, shak-shak, mandolin, saxophone and tambourine, with the audience singing along. Check the year's dates with the Carriacou tourism office. December brings the start of the dry season and the northerly swells, so anchor in Tyrrel Bay, not Hillsborough.
Best for
Christmas music and local humour
