Fort-de-France Chandleries and Boatyards (Baie des Tourelles)

14° 36.2′ N · 61° 3.5′ W

The commercial-port side of Fort-de-France, east of Fort Saint-Louis, has a small careenage with a haul-out yard, chandleries, sailmaker, rigging, welding and fibreglass shops: the island's second yachting service centre after Le Marin.

Practical

Position is Carenantilles Fort-de-France (ActiveCaptain). ActiveCaptain (2017 review): smaller sister of the Carenantilles yard at Le Marin. Haul-out only for boats with less than 2 m draft, and dearer than Le Marin, but with chandleries on site, metal fabrication, engine repair and a sailmaker; the English-speaking manager coordinated sail, mast and fibreglass repairs. A few slips, quoted €50/night in 2017 (verify locally). No 110 V power. PolyMar chandlery is next door (ActiveCaptain 77980). Approach: follow the channel with the Hydrobase to starboard and the cruise-ship dock to port, and give cruise ships 150 m. By dinghy from the anchorage it is a wet ride round the fort; watch the coral heads. Noonsite (2018) mentions a chandler across the road from Leader Price in town too. Noonsite lists Fort-de-France and Le Marin as the island's boatyard centres.
