Church of the Immaculate Conception (Mayreau Catholic Church)

12° 38.4′ N · 61° 23.6′ W

Mayreau's little stone Catholic church, built in 1930, crowns the hilltop village. For generations it was the only church on the island, and from the yard behind it the whole Tobago Cays lagoon and Horseshoe Reef spread out below you.

Practical

Position from a geotagged Wikimedia Commons photograph of the church; OpenStreetMap maps the building (way 485381597) about 40 m east at 12.63934, -61.39295. Walk up from either bay on the steep concrete road: about 20 minutes from Salt Whistle Bay, less from the Saline Bay dinghy dock (turn left at the end of the dock). Doyle says Roman Catholics were for generations 'the only religious show in town', and a larger, newer church built by a member of the Eustace family stands across the road. Doyle also reports that a significant portion of the old church collapsed during Hurricane Beryl in 2024, so expect damage or repair work and do not enter unstable sections. The hilltop view is unaffected. Petit St Vincent's day-trip guide describes it as a stone church high on the hill with 'magnificent views of nearby Tobago Cays'. Morning light is best for photographing the Cays. The village cemetery lies just north on the same hillside. Dress modestly if a service is on.
